  • It celebrated Sebastian Vettel’s retirement after four World Championships
  • Hamilton ‘picked up the bill, which may have been as high as £140,000’

The full F1 grid was pictured out for dinner in Abu Dhabi this week, as they celebrated Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from the sport.

The meal was reportedly organised by Vettel’s old rival Lewis Hamilton, who is also said to have picked up the bill.

Vettel and Hamilton both joined the F1 grid in 2007 and have spent much of their time racing together as fierce rivals. They dominated the World Championship race for a decade, accounting for 10 out of 11 titles between 2010 and 2020.

Despite their fierce rivalry, which came to a head in spectacular fashion in 2017 when Vettel drove into Hamilton in anger in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the pair appear to have mellowed. The Mirror reported the Brit ‘insisted’ on picking up the bill, which may have been as high as £140,000.

Hamilton’s teammate George Russell posted a picture of the evening on twitter with the caption: ‘Great evening with the rest of the guys celebrating Seb’s last race. Cheers!’

Another picture posted online appeared to show an astronomical tab that matches the time and location the F1 stars were eating, but it is not known if this is the correct bill.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix, Hamilton reflected on his 15-year-rivalry with Vettel and what might come next for the German. He said: ‘When I think of Seb, he was a bit of a nuisance back then!

‘We always had such great battles, honestly, and I was just thinking, most drivers are coming back. Alonso came back, Seb’s probably going to come back. Formula One has a way of sucking you back in. We’ve noticed that from so many other drivers.’

Vettel is set to make his 299th and final F1 start tomorrow after a career that has seen him win four World Championships and 53 wins.
